Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Inhabits subterranean limestone cave networks (cenotes) in Mexico and Texas. Darkness is perpetual, there are no aquatic plants, and the primary food source is bat guano or dead insects falling from the surface.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Over millennia, this variant completely lost its sight (eyes degenerate shortly after hatching and are covered by skin) to save energy. Conversely, it possesses a hyper-developed lateral line and mighty olfactory chemical sensors on its skull.

Social Behavior: Forms large roaming schools constantly patrolling the lower water layers. Swimming is continuous, acting like a living sonar mapping the tank. If kept alone, it panics, refuses food, and becomes lethargic.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Lacks melanin: the body is translucent pink-whitish with silver iridescence around the visible swim bladder. Females are noticeably rounder and larger.

Care and observations

Tank Setup: Demands a thematic biotope. Lights off or reduced to dim moonlight LEDs. Substrate must be smooth gravel or sand, with smooth rocks devoid of sharp edges (no Dragon Stone or lava rock) to prevent traumatic lacerations when the fish occasionally bumps into them.

Feeding and Diet: Tactile and olfactory hunter. In mixed tanks, it will NEVER have the speed to visually compete and will starve. Feeds by raking the bottom for strongly odoriferous sinking foods like frozen bloodworms.

Water Quality: Being a cave fish, it requires hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5 - 8.5) and cool temperatures (18-23°C). Placing it in a typical 28°C acidic Amazonian tank destroys its osmoregulatory system.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: A species-only tank is ideal. Can cohabitate with peaceful bottom dwellers. Curiously, they are fin-nippers to veil-tailed fish, as their echolocation detects large fins as soft hanging food.

Aquarium Reproduction: Brutal egg-scatterers. They release up to 1000 eggs and instantly cannibalize them. Fry are born with eyes that are later resorbed.

Risks and Diseases: Intense light stress causes immune collapse. Mechanical wounds from bumping into equipment (e.g., hot heaters) quickly infect with fungi. They often swim blindly into filter intakes.
