The Oscar Cichlid (*Astronotus ocellatus*) is undoubtedly the most famous "water dog" of the aquariology world. This massive South American predator, capable of abundantly exceeding 35 cm (14 inches) in length (often approaching 40 cm / 16 inches in male specimens) and 15 years of life, is loved for its stunning intelligence. It learns to recognize the owner, greets by wagging its tail, literally eats from hands and often allows itself to be stroked. Originally greenish brown with ocelli (eye-shaped spots) on the base of the tail to confuse piranhas, selection has created very famous variants: the Tiger Oscar (black and fire red), the Red Oscar (entirely orange) and the Albino. Despite its size and grim appearance, the Oscar is not a gratuitous brawler like Central American cichlids, but is a tactical predator with an impressively fast growth.

Description

The Jump Out of the Water (Close the Lid):

When it sees you approaching the tank with the food jar in hand, it will go into a predatory ecstasy. It will start "wagging its tail" at the water's surface opening its mouth. Attention: despite being stocky, its muscular thrust is frightening. To take a cricket or food from your fingers or simply out of eagerness, it will launch all its 14 inches in the air. If the tank is not covered by THICK glass (and preferably blocked by weights), you will find it beached and dead on your living room rug.

Care and observations

The Puppy Becomes a Calf:

In the stores you will see dozens of gorgeous Oscar puppies, black and orange, barely 2 inches long. This is a death trap. Unlike most fish, an Oscar grows at an impressive rate: if fed well, it will reach 10 inches in its FIRST YEAR of life. If you buy it to put it in a common 30 or 50 gallon domestic aquarium, you will ruin its skeletal system, it will not be able to turn around and will die suffocated by its own toxic excrement. Only monumental tanks of at least 100 gallons (400 liters) each.

Death to Goldfish (The Predator's Bluff):

A cruel and sick American custom is to raise Oscars by feeding them throwing dozens of live goldfish into the tank to see them hunt. Stop immediately. The goldfish (*Carassius*) is full of thiaminase (an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1) and huge amounts of fat. In addition, feeder goldfish carry dozens of parasites and diseases. If you feed an Oscar with goldfish or beef heart, its liver will fatten up until it fails or it will fill up with parasites, killing it prematurely. Give them floating top quality pellets, earthworms (real garden ones) and insects.

The Big Dog Who Furnishes the House:

It is incredibly intelligent, so much so as to have personal tastes in furnishing. If you put a large wood or a tube that it does not like visually or that gets in its way, the Oscar will take the trouble to take it in its mouth, pull it across the tank and throw it in a corner. If there is a plant, it will bite it off and spit it out. If you put the thermometer hanging on the glass, it will take it and shatter it on the glass for fun. You are the guest in its house.

Fish profile

Temperament: Pacifico (in proporzione alla stazza) ma Predatorio. Non è inutilmente crudele e spesso non bada ai coinquilini grandi, ma possiede una bocca che agisce come un imbuto aspiratore. La regola d'oro: "Qualsiasi cosa entri fisicamente nella sua bocca, è da considerarsi cibo".
Diet: Onnivoro Predatore / Carnivoro. Mangiatore famelico. Base di grossi pellet galleggianti per ciclidi. Va integrato con lombrichi di terra vivi (li adorano), insetti (grilli), e occasionali pezzi di gamberetto o polpa di pesce. DIVIETO ASSOLUTO: Non nutriteli con pesci rossi vivi (portatori di malattie) né con cuore di bue (i grassi dei mammiferi causeranno un'occlusione epatica fatale nel giro di un paio d'anni).

Sex ratio: Singolo (Wet Pet) o Coppia stabile. Il dimorfismo sessuale è totalmente assente: è impossibile distinguere un maschio da una femmina visivamente fino al giorno in cui non estraggono le papille genitali per deporre. L'inserimento casuale di due adulti sfocia spesso in guerre territoriali estenuanti a colpi di mandibola, risolvibili solo separandoli.
Feeding frequency: 1 volta al giorno (Fino a saltare 2 giorni a settimana negli adulti per evitare letali obesità). Mangiano in modo disordinato (sbriciolando mezza pastiglia dalle branchie) rendendo l'acqua tossica in poche ore se non ci sono filtri potenti.
Bioload: Altissimo (Le dimensioni del pesce e le sue feci, paragonabili a quelle di un piccolo gatto, richiedono cambi d'acqua del 50% settimanali).
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Debole. Non sono nuotatori da rapide e la loro grande stazza laterale li rende goffi nelle forti correnti.

Reproduction: Substrato-deponenti biparentali aperti. Puliranno accuratamente una pietra piatta spostando tutta la sabbia circostante e deporranno fino a 1000 uova. Diventano ferocemente aggressivi durante le cure parentali, terrorizzando l'intero acquario. Avviso: i giovani, nati neri a bande bianche orizzontali, sono bersaglio facilissimo di infezioni se l'acqua non è perfetta.
Compatibility: Vasca per Grandi Ciclidi Sudamericani. Eccellente se accoppiato (in vasche gigantesche, 800+ litri) a ciclidi dal temperamento moderato (Heros Severus, Geophagus giganti) o ad enormi Loricaridi (Pleco). Sconsigliato l'abbinamento a ciclidi centroamericani ultra-aggressivi (Giaguaro o Midas) in quanto l'Oscar, per quanto grande, non è mentalmente in grado di resistere ai loro morsi implacabili.
