Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Unique subtropical distribution: inhabits rivers in Paraguay and Paraná basins in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. Cooler (18-24°C) and harder water than Amazonian species.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Dwarf cichlid (max 6-7 cm males). The male's high, rounded dorsal fin opens like an umbrella during displays. Rounded spatulate caudal.
Social Behavior: Less aggressive than most Apistogramma. Males are territorial but with contained ferocity. Breeding females are protective but cause less collateral damage.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: 'Opal' males: metallic iridescent blue-azure head and back with golden-yellow flanks. Females in breeding: canary yellow with black lateral band.
Care and observations
Tank Setup: 80+ liters with fine sand, branching wood, catappa leaves. Each female needs her own cave. Dim lighting with floating plants.
Feeding: Omnivorous micro-predator. Less picky than other Apistogramma about dry food, but variety remains essential for iridescent colors.
Water Quality: The genus exception. Tolerates pH 5.5-7.5, GH up to 15, and crucially, temperatures of 20-26°C — much cooler than other Apistogramma. Moderately hard tap water often works untreated.
Compatibility: Excellent with small Tetras, Corydoras, Otocinclus. Tolerates mid-water tankmates much better than macmasteri or cacatuoides.
Reproduction: Relatively easy. The female guards without the homicidal hysteria of macmasteri. Fry accept artemia nauplii from day one.
Risks: Hexamita risk in hard water but significantly less than other Apistogramma. Above 28°C for prolonged periods, accelerated metabolism reduces longevity.
