The Green Terror (*Andinoacara rivulatus*) is the most feared and respected cichlid of Pacific South America. The name is not a coincidence, but a severe warning. Aesthetically it is one of the most dazzling freshwater fish on the planet: the massive male (which exceeds 20-25 cm / 8-10 inches) develops a formidable frontal nuchal hump and an armored livery of neon green/blue scales, framed by a thick and unmistakable fire orange band (or pure white in the 'White Saum') on all fins and on the tail. Despite the regal charm, it is an explosive, irascible and dominant predator, whose lethal territoriality imposes an arrangement considered to the millimeter so as not to transform the aquarium into a deadly ring for the other fish.

Despite the fierce character, raising a single male alone (Wet Pet) will give you the perfect pet. It will stare at you from the glass with very lively eyes, will recognize who brings it shrimp and will proudly show its majestic and gigantic frontal adipose hump (typical of healthy males) showing off the bright electric orange edge of the tail.

Care and observations

The Deadly Thermal Mistake (They are from the Mountains, not the Jungle):

The Green Terror is NOT an Amazonian hot broth fish. It lives in the western rivers of Peru descending from the Andes. If you keep it at 82 or 84°F (28-29°C) like Discus, it will go into hypermetabolism, will become even more madly aggressive and will die quickly exhausted. They must stay cool, strictly between 68 and 75°F (20-24°C), with lots of oxygen and a huge filter to imitate the moving water of the South American hills.

The Real Danger (Why "Terror"):

Many novices buy an Oscar, consider it bad, and then mistakenly buy a Green Terror puppy. When the *Andinoacara* reaches 6 inches it reveals its nature: it is a ruthless fighting machine. It will beat the Oscar (which is twice its size) with headbutts on the flanks until it forces it perpetually into a corner, becoming the absolute dictator of the tank. Any new fish inserted will be considered a threat to its area and will be brutally mutilated.

Temperament: Aggressivo e Fortemente Territoriale. Il soprannome 'Terrore Verde' è meritato. Tollerano malissimo l'intrusione nel loro territorio (che considerano pari all'intero acquario) e attaccano spesso con testate e morsi pesci anche più grandi di loro.
Diet: Onnivoro Carnivoro. Estremamente vorace. Richiede pellet di taglia media-grande ad alto contenuto proteico, crostacei (gamberi sgusciati, krill) e lombrichi di terra vivi. Sporadica integrazione vegetale (piselli) per prevenire blocchi intestinali. Da evitare mammiferi e pesci rossi da pasto.

Sex ratio: Singolo (Wet Pet) o Coppia Confermata. Acquistare due adulti a caso porta quasi sempre alla morte del sottomesso. Una coppia formatasi spontaneamente da giovani sarà legatissima ma sterminerà qualsiasi altro inquilino in acquari sotto i 500 litri durante le cure parentali.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno (Esemplari Giovani), 1 volta al giorno o a giorni alterni (Adulti Jumbo).
Bioload: Alto. Pesci dalla conformazione massiccia e dall'apparato digerente estremamente attivo.
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Veloce (Apprezzano acqua ossigenatissima e mossa, tipica dei bacini andini).
Jump risk: Covered tank required
Reproduction: Substrato-deponenti biparentali. Le coppie depongono centinaia di uova su rocce lisce. La metamorfosi cromatica durante il corteggiamento è pazzesca (il maschio diventa quasi nero per far spiccare le scaglie al neon). La letalità della difesa parentale è leggendaria.
Compatibility: Mantenimento Difficile in Comunità ('Monster Tank'). Condivisibile ESCLUSIVAMENTE con Loricaridi enormi e corazzati o robustissimi Characidi di taglia XL (es. Astyanax giganti o Prochilodus) in vasche oltre 600 litri. Sconsigliato l'abbinamento con l'Oscar, che il Terrore Verde tenderebbe a stressare e attaccare fisicamente nonostante le dimensioni.
