Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (L183)
Ancistrus dolichopterus
The Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (*Ancistrus dolichopterus* or L183) is the sparkling gem of the Ancistrus family. Not to be confused with the common and less conspicuous *Ancistrus sp.* (often fraudulently sold under the same name), the authentic L183 is distinguished by an ink-black body sprinkled with hundreds of tiny, brilliant white dots, completed by an unmistakable and marked milk-white hem on the dorsal and caudal fins that never fades with age. A splendid algae eater, it is an inhabitant of dark waters that combines utility with top-level aesthetics.

Description
Geographical Origin:
Endemic to the Rio Negro basin (Brazil). These waters are slow, extremely dark (coffee-colored) due to decomposing humic acids, and have very few dissolved minerals.
Morphology and Authentic Identification:
Commercial confusion is rampant. The *true* L183 possesses 1) a jet-black base color, 2) very fine, brilliant star-like white dots (not faded spots), 3) one or two pristine, unbroken white bands on the outer margin of the dorsal and caudal fins that *remain visible throughout the life* of the animal, not fading in adulthood. They inherit the typical flat morphology of the Ancistrus genus, with the characteristic plethora of branched fleshy tentacles (the famous bristles) erupting like a bush on the head of the dominant male.
Care and observations
Tank Setup:
It is imperative to understand its demanding nature: it is not a hard tap water fish like the common or golden Ancistrus. It needs a well-matured aquarium (at least 80 cm / 30 inches) set up specifically as an amber biotope (*Blackwater*). Wood is not just a decorative element, it is an absolute biological necessity: the L183 rasps submerged roots to obtain lignin essential for its long intestinal digestion. Form burrows by stacking smooth pebbles and clay tubes. Lighting must not be too bright, or it will remain perpetually hidden.
Diet:
Exceptional eater of bio-film and soft algae on the glass (but will not touch black brush algae). The mistake to avoid is not feeding it hoping it will live off cleaning. The menu must be 80% vegetable: slices of sweet potato, zucchini (secured to the bottom with a toothpick or fork), shelled peas, and sinking vegetable tablets. 20% of the diet must be protein (krill or bloodworms) to bring females into breeding condition.
Water Quality:
Originating from the Rio Negro, the largest blackwater river in the world. The water must be acidic (pH 5.5 - 7.0), almost devoid of hardness (low GH), and rich in protective tannins released from Catappa leaves or peat extracts. They tolerate high temperatures very well (26-29°C / 79-84°F), making them excellent companions for Discus, but they require strong oxygenation.
Fish profile
- Temperament
- Diet
- Onnivoro tendenzialmente erbivoro/xilofago.
