The Midas Cichlid (*Amphilophus citrinellus*) is the epitome of the 'Wet Pet' (aquatic pet). Easily reaching 30 cm (12 inches) and beyond, this gigantic and stocky golden beast is famous for its amazing interactivity with the breeder: it will recognize you, follow your movements in the room and will (literally) let itself be stroked or hand-fed. In nature, the typical coloration is a barred grey/brown, but aquariology has selected phenotypes of a dazzling solid yellow-orange, peach or fire red. Adult males develop one of the most massive and extreme nuchal humps (adipose bumps on the forehead) in the entire fish kingdom. However, behind the "big puppy" attitude towards its master, hides one of the most madly intolerant and irascible cichlids of all Central America towards other fish.

Do not buy it if you want a mixed or community tank. The Midas MUST be in complete solitary confinement (solo Wet Pet). He hates all other fish and will mutilate or slowly eat them until he is the only survivor. In exchange for his isolation, he will develop a stunning intelligence with you: he will squirt water to call you, eat by jumping out of the water to take crustaceans from your fingers and will beg you for cuddles like an aquatic pitbull.

Care and observations

You Do Not Decide the Furnishings (The Midas Architect):

A classic mistake: spending $100 on elegant wood and rocks. When you put the 2-inch orange puppy in the aquarium, the tank will be magnificent. After a year the 12-inch monster with the huge hump will destroy it piece by piece. He will take 5-pound rocks in his mouth and slam them against the glass. He will violently uproot all your very expensive plants to make his pit. He will move entire dunes of sand hiding the filter. He decides the placement of the rocks, resign yourself: silicone them to avoid collapses.

The Murderous Wife-Seeking Male (No Pairs in the Tank):

If you want to make the big yellow male with a big bump happy by buying him a female (who is smaller and without a hump), stop. Midas mating is brutal. In a 5-foot tank, if she is not "in heat" but he is, he will relentlessly pursue her until he flays her alive, disemboweling her in a corner. To save the female you would need to hide her in thick opaque industrial PVC pipes where the giant male cannot physically slip in to beat her.

Death to Glass Heaters:

He is a "Glass-Banger". If a stranger gets too close, he will launch himself with all his muscular strength to slam his teeth against the front glass to challenge him. This means that if you have the old fragile glass heaters immersed in the tank and they bother him visually, he will destroy them with headbutts, taking and giving an electric shock to the water. Use only strictly titanium armored heaters.

Fish profile

Temperament: Violento, Distruttivo e 'Glass-Banger' (Sbatti-vetro). È estremamente territoriale. Se tenuto da solo attaccherà la propria immagine riflessa o si scaglierà contro il vetro se estranei (non l'allevatore) si avvicina. Con altri pesci, il suo istinto è quello di sterminarli metodicamente a morsi per dominare l'intero volume d'acqua.
Diet: Onnivoro. È un mangiatore titanico. Ha forti mandibole e denti per spezzare gusci di lumache. Dieta base di pellet galleggianti XXL per grandi ciclidi americani. Insaziabile, va nutrito in modo massiccio ma variegato: piselli sbollentati, lombrichi enormi, gamberetti sgusciati. Tende rapidamente all'obesità se iper-nutrito con cuori di bue.

Sex ratio: Esemplare Singolo ('Wet Pet'). L'allevamento in coppia è estremamente difficile in vasche sotto i 600 litri: le violenze domestiche finiscono quasi sempre con il maschio (molto più grosso e 'gobbuto') che massacra la femmina in assenza di infiniti nascondigli impenetrabili in tubi in PVC.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno (Porzioni abbondanti). Quando è sazio, l'enorme ventre sarà teso; evitate sovralimentazioni per non affaticare l'apparato epatico.
Bioload: Altissimo (Gigante pesante, metabolismo rapido e quantitativi spropositati di feci).
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Debole. Data la stazza e l'enorme gobba frontale del maschio, correnti troppo forti lo stancano inutilmente.

Reproduction: Substrato-deponenti biparentali aperti. Altamente prolifici. L'iper-aggressività dei genitori in fregola è leggendaria. Avviso letale (Ibridazione): Si incrocia con facilità assoluta con altri Amphilophus (es. l'affine A. labiatus, il Ciclide Diavolo Rosso), rendendo oggi i veri Mida e Red Devil puri estremamente difficili da reperire (spesso sono tutti meticci).
Compatibility: Vasca Monospecifica Solitaria (Wet Pet Tank). Il Mida va comprato per essere allevato DA SOLO. È la regola d'oro. In vasche dai 600 litri in su si può azzardare la convivenza con ciclidi sudamericani corazzati e veloci, ma la pace non è mai garantita. Ucciderà implacabilmente piccoli pesci, strapperà le antenne ai loricaridi (pulitori da vetro) o li ucciderà tentando di mangiarli interi.
