It takes its name from its very particular coat: a silver-grey/bluish body unmistakably striated by very heavy vertical black bands, which exactly remember the striped uniform of an inmate (or a zebra). As a puppy it is an adorable silver little fish. As an adult (it reaches 10-15 cm / 4-6 inches) it transforms into a compact and indestructible armored vehicle: a miniaturized "aquatic pitbull". Adult females sport a magnificent phosphorescent orange spot on their belly. Its worldwide fame is due to its ability to reproduce literally "even in a puddle", but this explosive prolificacy is accompanied by a lethal parental aggression completely off the scale for its size.

The Beginner's Best Friend (Titanic Resistance):

Its terrible reputation as a "pest" hides a wonderful side for those starting out. It is the most robust fish in aquariology. It tolerates frightening filter swings, does not get serious diseases (Ich), forgives any chemical measurement error and eats literally any brand of food you buy voraciously. Perfect (solo 'Wet Pet') to make children fall in love with the hobby.

Care and observations

The Mini-Pitbull (Bites You Too):

Do not be fooled by its small fish size (the male reaches 15 cm / 6 inches and the female stops at 10 cm / 4 inches). This fish has the heart of a Spartan fighter, and has no fear of death. It is very common to see it used as a "target" in tanks with monstrous South American cichlids three times its size... with the stunning result that the Convict imposes itself, headbutts the Midas and appropriates half the tank chasing the giants away. It will fearlessly bite your fingers if you put them near its cave making you jump in the air from fear.

The Reproductive Plague (Do Not Buy the Pair):

If the water is wet, they have children. It is the most prolific fish in the world. You do not need to give it the perfect temperature or luxury food. The female and the male will look for an empty coconut or a terracotta pot and will have 300 children every month, continuously, for years. The problem? They will exterminate the aquarium. The two parents act as a shield, brutally beat and kill Angelfish, Guppies and Corydoras tearing them apart with bites to defend the perimeter of their children's cave.

The Boss Male and the Orange Female:

It is one of the few fish where the female is not ugly. You will recognize her at 2 inches in length because she turns on a fluorescent orange-copper spot on her soft belly (the male instead develops pointed fins and is bigger). If you buy only males or only females you will have super resistant fish that literally NEVER die. But the day you put the two sexes together in the peaceful community aquarium, that day will be the apocalypse and you will have to disassemble the tank.

Sex ratio: Coppia Monogama Legatissima. Distinguerli è facilissimo da sub-adulti: la femmina (più piccina) si accende di un bellissimo arancio-rame acceso sul ventre, mentre il maschio rimane grigio a strisce nere sviluppando con l'età un marcato bernoccolo frontale (gibbosità nucale) e pinne anali e dorsali a punta, molto più lunghe.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno. Molto attivi ed energici all'ora del pasto.
Bioload: Medio (Tuttavia la prolifica e costante nascita di centinaia di avannotti incrementerà pesantemente il carico della vasca se non gestiti).
Flow: Corrente da Moderata a Debole. Adattabili praticamente a ogni ecosistema, prediligono ambienti riparati da radici per nidificare.
Reproduction: Substrato-deponenti / Trovatori di Grotte biparentali. LA "PESTE" DELL'ACQUARIOFILIA. Un maschio e una femmina inseriti in vasca si riprodurranno il 100% delle volte, deponendo fino a 300 uova dentro una caverna (o un buco scavato). La mamma protegge i piccoli, il papà massacra l'acquario. Sono i migliori genitori del mondo ittico, ma invaderanno l'acquario di migliaia di minuscoli ibridi invendibili in pochi mesi. Non comprate la coppia a meno che non abbiate altri grandi predatori in vasca che 'smaltiscano' gli eccessi.
Compatibility: Convivenza Paradoxale (Vasca Americana). Il Forzato si può abbinare: o a pesci pacifici velocissimi e di superficie (che scappino) in grandi vasche, oppure (sorprendentemente) in acquari con "Monster Fish" enormi e spietati (Oscar, Mida). Infatti il Convict è l'unico pesciolino piccolo che, grazie alla sua impavidità folle e alla testardaggine, riesce a tenere testa a morsi ai colossi di 30 cm obbligandoli a lasciargli l'angolino di roccia.
