Altolamprologus calvus

The *Altolamprologus calvus* is one of the most morphologically bizarre and fascinating creatures of the aquatic world. It has an alien shape to say the least: the body is very high but literally flattened laterally (compressed almost like a sole placed vertically), with a huge mouth, protruding upwards, and a forehead without scales (hence the Latin name 'calvus', that is, bald). The most widespread livery ('Black Calvus') is a pitch black ink studded with hundreds of pearly white dots, with dark tiger stripes that appear depending on the mood. This "knife" shape is an ingenious evolutionary adaptation: it allows it to slip into the narrowest calcareous crevices of Tanganyika to plunder the nests of other cichlids, making it the stealth assassin par excellence of the lake.

Description

Exasperating Growth (The Fish of Patience):

A warning for beginners: if you buy a young Calvus, resign yourself. It is perhaps one of the slowest growing aquarium fish ever in proportion to the adult size. It can take TWO or THREE YEARS of perfect care to make the male reach his majestic adult size (13 cm). Do not force him eating algae, he feeds on pure aquatic meat (Krill, Mysis, brine shrimp).

Care and observations

The Baby-Eating Knife Fish (Demographic Sweeper):

The flat "vertical sole" shape of this fish is no coincidence. In nature it is the number one killer of fry (baby fish). It flattens itself and manages to slip sideways into the most microscopic crevices of the rocks where other cichlids hide their litters, to eat them. In a mixed Tanganyika aquarium it is perfect to avoid overpopulation: it will be him, inexorably and silently, who will make all the excess fry of your Shell-dwellers disappear at night.

The Frontal Scale Armor (Fake Submission):

Despite its size, the Calvus hates the brutal brawls typical of Mbunas and does not pick fights pointlessly. If threatened by another fish, it adopts a brilliant defense technique. It does not flee nor respond to bites. It simply curves its body into a 'U', offering the enemy its very hard flank. Its lateral scales are armored like stone and very dense; the aggressor, biting it, will literally hurt its teeth against the Calvus's armor and will run away defeated by its own passive aggression.

The Prison for Breeders (Shells and Narrow Holes):

If you are interested in reproducing it, you will witness an absurd dynamic. The female will remain very small throughout her life (5-6 cm / 2 inches) while the male will become a colossus of 13 cm (5 inches) in height. At the time of spawning, the little female will hole up inside a gigantic empty snail shell (or in a very small crevice of a round stone) where the gigantic husband CANNOT enter and will spend her life closed in there until the eggs hatch, while he will fertilize the nest by shooting sperm from outside the entrance.

Temperament: Letalmente calmo e furtivo. Non è un bullo attaccabrighe. Il Calvus galleggia quasi immobile, oscuro e silenzioso, tra le rocce. Tuttavia, è un predatore formidabile e metodico: difenderà la sua posizione semplicemente inclinando il suo corpo durissimo coperto di scaglie armate per farsi "mordere a vuoto" dai rivali senza subire danni.
Diet: Micro-Predatore / Piscivoro specializzato (Razziatore di nidi). In natura si infila nelle fessure strette per cibarsi degli avannotti (i figli neonati) e delle uova degli altri ciclidi. In acquario richiede esclusivamente dieta carnivora di pregio: mysis, artemia salina arricchita, piccoli crostacei surgelati e granulati proteici affondanti. I cibi vegetali sono sconsigliati.

Sex ratio: Singolo Maschio, Coppia, o Harem (1 Maschio e 2 Femmine). Il maschio diventa un colosso alto quasi 14 cm, lentissimo a crescere. Le femmine restano minuscole (5-6 cm). Due maschi adulti in una vasca sotto i 150 cm ingaggeranno lunghissime e stressanti prove di forza mettendosi muso contro muso a bocche spalancate.
Feeding frequency: 1-2 volte al giorno. Cacciatore d'imboscata: è lento nel raggiungere il cibo in superficie rispetto a ciclidi più rapidi, richiede attenzione nella somministrazione.
Bioload: Medio-Basso (Crescita lentissima e corporatura molto magra nonostante l'altezza).
Flow: Corrente Debole a Moderata. Le loro ampie pinne laterali e la forma a coltello non gradiscono flussi liberi stile fiume in piena.
Reproduction: Substrato-deponenti / Conchigliofili opportunisti. Riproduzione affascinante ma elitaria. Il maschio attira la microscopica femmina, la quale depone le uova in un pertugio così minuscolo (spesso il guscio di un lumacone vuoto o un anfratto millimetrico) che il gigantesco maschio non può entrarci, fecondando il nido spruzzando lo sperma dall'esterno della fessura.
Compatibility: Mantenimento Delicato (Perfetto per Biotipo Tanganica). Eccellente con Julidochromis, Neolamprologus brichardi o i Conchigliofili, purché abbiate messo in conto che mangerà immancabilmente i loro piccoli (agendo come super-controllore demografico). DIVIETO ASSOLUTO: Non allevare con gli Mbuna del Malawi: la loro iperattività brutale terrorizzerebbe a morte il calmo Calvus.
